WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- All of the Wilmington teams were eliminated prior to Wednesday's play, but that was not the case for softball squads from Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin and Pender County. In fact the debs division, which is essentially the high school division Burgaw defeated Brunswick County for the state championship title.
In the belles division South Columbus was considered to be one of the favorites to advance to the Dixie World Series, But South Columbus lost in the semi-finals on Wednesday to Cumberland County. The Burgaw belles were supposed to play Cumberland in the finals on Wednesday night, but foul weather got in the way. Cumberland and Burgaw played Thursday morning instead. Burgaw won to advance to the Dixie World Series in the belles division.
Burgaw also had a team in the ponytail finals. That's the age group for 11 and 12 year olds. Until Wednesday Burgaw was practically perfect. They scored 58 runs, allowing only one. They were challenged by Dunn though, yet Burgaw will advance to the Dixie World Series in Louisiana with an 18-7 victory.
