BB&T Jamboree set for August 12th

WILMINGTON, NC (news release ) -– The 25th annual BB&T Football Jamboree will be held Aug. 12 at Legion Stadium in Wilmington. The prep scrimmage is a fundraiser for 10 southeastern North Carolina high schools and student scholarships.

The jamboree begins at 5 p.m. with a cheerleading showcase featuring squads from New Hanover, E.A. Laney, John T. Hoggard, West Brunswick, Whiteville, Wallace-Rose Hill, South Columbus, South Brunswick, Jacksonville and Ashley high schools.

Scrimmages begin at 6 p.m. The match-ups in order are:

New Hanover vs. South Columbus
Laney vs. Whiteville
Ashley vs. West Brunswick
Hoggard vs. South Brunswick
Jacksonville vs. Wallace Rose Hill

Each game consists of two 12-minute periods.

“This annual event highlights the excitement and anticipation for a run at conference titles and state playoffs for the 10 area high schools,” said BB&T’s Randy Huggins, jamboree chairman. “It is one of the most exciting high school events in southeastern North Carolina with a playoff atmosphere to help kick-off the season.”

Proceeds from last year’s event totaled $44,599, enough to fund 20 $1,000 scholarships (two per school). In addition, participating schools received about $2,385 each for their general operating budgets. The 2010 jamboree drew an attendance of 8,388.

Since its inception in 1989, approximately $983,228 have been raised for southeastern North Carolina high schools, and included in that amount, 466 student scholarships totaling $452,000 have been awarded.

Advance tickets are $4 and available at all BB&T branches in Whiteville, Wilmington, Wallace, Rose Hill, Shallotte, Southport, Tabor City and Jacksonville. Tickets are $6 at the gate. (Coolers, bags and umbrellas are not permitted in Legion Stadium or at this event. Metal detectors are in use for admission into Legion Stadium.)

The BB&T Football Jamboree Scholarship Committee also allows each school to name the scholarships in honor of one of its supporters – living or deceased – who either served on the school staff or in the administrative system. The initial recognition is for a five-year period. After that period, each school can honor another individual.

“Schools select individuals who have inspired student athletes over the years through their leadership and teaching qualities,” Huggins said.

The scholarship certificates presented to the students included information on the scholarship honorees. They are:
